That time of year is here again! The holidays… for many this time brings a sense of joy and positive feelings associated with childhood memories and family gatherings. However, for others, this time of year is the most stressful and anxiety provoking time. Those who may not have family and friends nearby or who are critical of their abilities in making the holidays enjoyable for them and their families. If you are the latter individual, there are techniques you can use to reduce stress and achieve a sense of satisfaction, throughout the holiday time and all year long. Here are several ideas:
Take a walk – This sounds simple but many individual’s live sedentary lifestyles. Getting out and walking will increase endorphins and you only need short periods of time of movement to increase mood.

Bubble bath – Here is another simple one. Go to the store and buy your favorite bubble bath and take some time to soak in the tub. To add to your stress relief, light a scented candle or play relaxing music.

Take a break and breathe – Life can seem overwhelming at times but doing something as simple of breathing will actually help you feel better! Take three deep breathes, and focus on the sound of your breathe as you inhale and exhale slowly.

Get help and learn other relaxation skills – There are many strategies clinicians use to help their clients learn to relax. One is progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), which involves individually tensing and relaxing various muscle groups.
